1 Melchizedek is a fragmentary apocalyptic account found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The prophecy centers around Melchizedek, the priestly king said to anoint Abraham in Genesis 14:18-20. As in Psalm 110:4, 1 Melchizedek portrays the king as a spiritual model for the coming Messiah in his day of judgment. The text draws heavily from the Hebrew Bible, reinterpreting the Law of Moses in apocalyptic terms.
The narrative describes Melchizedek's role on the Day of Atonement, where he is prophesized to carry out the Lord's justice. He is foretold to separate out the Sons of Light from the forces of evil, liberating the righteous from the oppression of Israel's spiritual enemies. 1 Melchizedek provides a unique window into the eschatology of the Qumram Essenes.
